Dr. Richard Taylor

Independent MP for Wyre Forest (2001-05) & (2005 -
(Wyre Forest is in north Worcestershire and encompasses Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn and Bewdley)

Independent Kidderminster Hospital and Health Concern

Independent Kidderminster Hospital and Health Concern is a political party registered with the Electoral Commission, within the United Kingdom, using the 'Heart-In-Hands' logo as its symbol.
The use of these titles and emblems without due authority is prohibited.

Date of birth

7 July 1934 (Parents: Thomas Taylor and Mabel Hickley)

Dr Richard Thomas Taylor, BA, MB, FRCP, was educated at The Leys School, at Clare College Cambridge, and at (the former) Westminster Medical School (now part of the Imperial College School of Medicine),  becoming a Consultant Physician in Rheumatology at the Kidderminster General Hospital, before retiring in 1995. He was also a member of the local Health Authority.

As a young Doctor he did his National Service in the RAF, serving some time on Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean ! (see Hansard; 13 July 2006 - Column 1552)

Medical Career:

Political profile

In 2005, Richard Taylor became the only Independent MP to have retained his seat for a second term in the house since the 1949 elections.

He defeated a sitting government minister (David Lock - Labour - Lord Chancellor's Department) in 2001 to take Wyre Forest after campaigning on a single issue - saving the local Kidderminster Hospital which the government planned to downgrade - and was Quoted as "Mr. Smith goes to Westminster" by the radical 'Red Pepper' website.

"I used to be totally uninterested in politics,"

"My career move into politics was fired by complete and utter anger that a very few ill informed people had the right to take away a vital service for a population of 140 000 and wrap it up in spin."

In 1998, Worcestershire health authority favoured proposals that would close all acute inpatient services and the accident and emergency department at Kidderminster General Hospital, where Richard used to work. This would mean that all of the seriously ill local patients would have to travel many miles to hospitals in Worcester, Redditch, or Dudley for emergency and inpatient treatment.
Richard says: "This was simply a complete and utter disregard for the people and I felt that something must be done about it."

"I am glad to say that I have no major regrets about my life. I would like to have been better at playing golf and playing the piano than I am, but I would not have missed my career in medicine for anything. Sadly, my job as a consultant physician at a district general hospital did not help my first marriage, but my three children from that marriage are all doing very well without any scars. My second marriage is absolute bliss, and my wife and 10 year old daughter fully support my current career and enjoy the occasional trips to London. I am very fortunate to be enjoying my second career in politics, but strictly as an amateur."

He mainly speaks in the Commons on the health service and is a member of the Health Select Committee.
Nonetheless, his election address and his voting record in two Parliaments reflect his views on matters which defy routine political categorization.

Oral Answers to Questions - Children, Schools and Families: NHS Next Stage Review (30 Jun 2008)

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=2008-06-30a.593.0&s=speaker%3A11275#g606.1
Richard Taylor: May I welcome the emphasis on quality, and particularly on compassion and kindness? The debate in the House on 17 June on polyclinics cleared the air very well and told us exactly what GP-led health centres will have to provide. It also made it clear to me for the first time that existing GPs could bid for those services. It has come to my notice that the offers of bidding have closed in some PCT's before general practices have become aware of them. Is there any way by which the length of time can be extended so that GP's can tender on a level playing field?

Richard Taylor: With some exceptions, I have been desperately disappointed with this debate, which instead of being a celebration of 60 years of the health service, has descended into party political bickering. I was hoping, as there was no time limit, to devote a little time to reminiscing. I have been in the health service more than 50 years-much longer than most other people here-so I can...

Richard Taylor: It is a great privilege to follow our Chairman, who is allowing us to get out some quite strong condemnatory reports-not that this is one of the most condemnatory. It is also a huge privilege to speak second, because the Chairman has left us with a little more to say, and I can get in before all my hon. Friends-and I do call them friends-on the Committee. Richard Taylor: I thank my friend and medical colleague for that. I absolutely accept that, but things should not be discarded lightly. The Chairman of the Committee mentioned the speed of decisions. In our recommendations 15 and 16, we toyed with the idea of shorter inquiries or evaluation at launch. The Government's response was fairly defensive, but NICE's was rather better. It stated that it was not...

Richard Taylor: That is one of the huge difficulties with drugs. Some of their effects-good and bad-are not discovered until a long time after they have been used by hundreds, if not thousands, of people.
